> Which raises some important questions, the biggest being "Why bother?" After all, there's already a perfectly good Fediverse that could sure use the money and effort that Free Our Feeds is proposing to put into Bluesky.
Even a casual acquaintance with activitpub and atproto as protocols (and certainly their existing implementations) gives you the sense that we are in the early stages of what could be a major new modality for the internet.
But we are not there yet. The Fediverse is certainly not "perfectly good", nor is it clear that it could be made perfectly good with more love. And Bluesky is a twitter clone with forward looking decentralization statements.
Pushing any concrete decentralization idea and design to its limits is not just hedging / diversifying risk. There is a genuinely large space of possibilities that must be explored.
The beauty of bluesky getting traction (after mastodon did reasonably well itself with far fewer resources) is that this vague space has now two tangible data points. Two points define a line, three points a plane etc. In other words, this is a time for a Redesign of the Internet in Depth.
