Discourse is single-handedly rescuing the web forum concept from oblivion. Without Jeff, Facebook and WhatsApp would be ruling the roost, with scant competition from decades-old PHP forum software. Discourse is pretty easy to self-host, and you get fully-featured software with no "freemium" limitations. The Discourse team are also very generous to new contributors. If you want to get started with open source contribution, please contribute to these guys.
