I think everyone here is overestimating voters. Inflation was higher than it has been in recent history (ex COVID spike). This already defaults people into "kick the bums out" mode. Trump is rhetorically gifted and was able to latch onto the topic even if his solutions will only worsen it. Don't assume malice and conspiracy where incompetence and laziness suffice.
