I worked for a company that sent invites to a hotel ballroom.
- 9am: People told they were RIF'd (laid off)
- 10am: People that were told they still had a job. Champaign was served.
Some people showed up late.
- cebert 2y agoThat would cause quite a scene. I live in the Metro Detroit region. Many people who work for the automotive companies get cars or subsidized leases. This is especially common for managerial positions at these companies. I’ve heard several firsthand accounts where not only were employees laid off, but they also had to give back their vehicle immediately. These poor souls had to get picked up by a partner, friend, or Uber driver—I’d find that quite humiliating.

- jarsin 2y agoWhat's there to celebrate? Outside of Unicorns and big publicly traded companies few companies ever recover from a layoff. Its best to be out before everyone else.
- LinuxBender 2y agoWhat's there to celebrate? To your point, nothing. This was during the .com bomb. "Leadership" in many companies did a lot of cringe inducing things. This was just one of many examples. They also celebrated a 5 for 1 reverse stock split with Champagne. It was a running trend.
