I graduated from undergrad 25 yrs ago. I worked in 5 different business sectors with highly overlapping but also quite distinct skill sets (4.5 yrs of academia/writing papers, 5 yrs of telecom/signal processing engineering, 7 yrs of quantitative finance, 1 yr of mobile consumer-device intelligence, 7.5 yrs of information retrieval).
Every ~5 yrs I've had to reinvent myself.
So, what about the disruption from AI? Just suck it up, ok? You have to reinvent yourself anyway if you are in the tech sector. Start moving already. Every tech disruption is a challenge and opportunity.
- mauflows 2y agoCurious to learn more. Did you make these changes by just switching jobs? Did education precede it?
- starchild3001 2y agoBackground in telecommunications/signal processing (phd) + applied math. I studied finance + machine learning for two years as a hobby before the switch. In the evenings and weekends. Studied data structures + algorithms + python for two years before took a job as a software engineer in google (initially as a data scientist in apple). Worked 6 days a week for 1.5 yrs to master information retrieval in google. So lots of studying was involved on top of a solid educational base.
