I took a civics class in high school that touched on a lot of this - how to budget, the magic of compound interest, the real costs of having children etc. We even had to carry around a raw egg for two weeks as a proxy for a child, the idea being to give you a sense of how much attention children demand. Didn't stop me from getting in serious credit card debt, though.
