I spend most of my life in the terminal, and now I can watch
videos without flipping over to a web browser. I understand
that this isn't for everyone. If you enjoy using your browser
or mobile phone app to view videos, I'm not recommending you
stop. But it may be useful at some point in the future for you
to be able to do this, so maybe keep this tool in your back
pocket in case you need it in the future.
The video referenced above shows options to use with the mpv
video player on Debian 12 (bookworm) to render a video in an
xterm using sixel graphics and a link to the local sound
infrastructure.
I've had problems playing YouTube videos with mpv, but Vimeo
works fine. So if you want to watch this video, which shows how
to render a video in the terminal, in the terminal, the
following command should work (assuming you have mpv installed
and your local audio infrastructure is working.)
mpv --no-config --vo=sixel --profile=sw-fast \
--really-quiet --vo-sixel-reqcolors=0 --ao='pulse' \
https://vimeo.com/1048404200
And this is the command I used on Debian 12 to install mpv. It
seems to have included sixel support by default. Nice!
sudo apt-get install mpv
I'd love to know if it works on other Unix-like systems (other
Linuxes or Solaris or *BSD) or on WSL or XQuartz. Comments
describing your results (whether it works, fails or anything
in-between) are welcome.
