Are they considering things like Discord as "alone" or "hanging out"? Because I hang out with friends every night. Virtually. So does my teen son. He does good in school and is well-adjusted. This article seems a bit biased and old-fashioned.

    No, and there was no need to be an asshole about it. It's like talking about your human childhood and adolescence to an alien therapist. I hope you see what I'm getting at.

My teenage son hangs out with his friends every night. On discord and phone, playing shared games. When I was growing up at his age, other than at school, I maybe saw my friends once or twice a week at most.
