I recently took Amtrak across the country. In both Seattle and Chicago I showed up about 10 minutes before my train departed. Sure, they checked my ticket before I got onto the platform, but the experience was absolutely nothing like taking a flight. I wonder if it was something about the particular day or station you were at that made this worse.
- bobthepanda 2y agoI saw airline style entry at both Seattle and Portland recently. So it's certainly not uncommon, since the train I was on (Cascades) runs multiple times daily.
- tdeck 2y agoI don't much care where people check my ticket, as long as I don't have to arrive an hour early. The location of the ticket check isn't what makes airport travel a misery to me.
- bobthepanda 2y agoThe problem is having a whole train of people queue up takes like 15-30 minutes in the best of scenarios, assuming the train actually shows up by the time the queue has started, which it sometimes doesn’t. Cascades which runs between Seattle and Portland was the eight busiest route in 2023 with 746,000 riders so is substantially busier and more crowded than Seattle to Chicago.
