Realistically they were never going to destroy Hamas. At best they could only have limited its operational capability to the same as the numerous unorganized armed groups in the West Bank that still walk around today with guns and do smaller attacks against Israel.
Also so many Palestinian civilian casualties in a war that was marketed as a hostage saving mission is unacceptable. There has to be consequences between the stated goal of saving some hostages and the large amount of Palestinian civilian casualties.

- slt2021 2y agodestroying hamas was never a goal, Hamas has been Israel's ally in subverting movement for unified Palestinian statehood. As long as Hamas exists with maximalist demands to erase Israel, Israel's fascist right (Kahanites) has excuse to live in the "fight of flight" mode, demand resources for military+settlements, and demand billions in support from EU/USA. relationship btw Hamas and Israel is similar to that of between American Neocons and Al-Qaeda/Usama bin Laden/Mujahideen. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/10/world/middleeast/israel-qatar-money-prop-up-hamas.html https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/10/world/middleeast/israel-q...
