WTF? Since when is 1000€ laptop considered cheap?! Just because your work laptop costs double, doesn't mean that 1000€ is a cheap laptop.

Recently bought a random beater Lenovo Ideapad, and the screen is so bad it's giving me headaches, so there is some discernible bottom line besides the performance which admittedly is crazy nowadays measured per dollar / euro.

  He's from the bubble of highly paid SW devs where everyone buys themselves fully loaded 4000$ MAcBook Pros and 1k is cheap for a laptop.

  I came here to comment this, and had the exact same wording in my mind. Brother lives in another universe. 350$ old ThinkPads are great. I have a 260$ HP laptop for watching movies/tv/youtube, and that has lasted me 5 years with zero problems. I just added an 8 gig RAM stick and an SSD at the time of buying. Also, brother thinks 280 EUR for a smartwatch is cheap!

It’s amazing how the M1 Air aged, that is, not at all! I got one in a similar time and I haven’t felt the need to upgrade once. I’ll never stop complaining about how macOS is a subpar experience for software development, but the hardware is still, after 4 years, unmatched. I literally can’t buy a similarly well working windows or Linux laptop.

Macs give me headache because of the screen being too bright/colorful and no option fixes this. Lenovo Thinkpads do not.

> I don’t need the latest and greatest. I just need a tool that works. I like this mindset and I feel that I’m happier with it. It works for computers and for other gear, appliances, devices, etc too.

> With a machine this affordable, you sort of reprogram yourself to live within its boundaries. Do what I can, or do what my environment let me do. There are always restrictions, some of them put by ourselves taking some compromises. But the problem of subjective definitions is that we can change them, and if then this compromise wasn't good enough it could have been costlier than making the big spending on the first place. Make sure that that change of mind worth it.
