I have a similar experience with my Hyundai Kona Electric. Even the automatic headlights are by far the worst I have ever used (and that includes a 1996 Ford Taurus). They only reliably stay off for a few hours around noon on overcast days, where the illumination is bright and diffuse. Otherwise they toggle on and off while I am driving through shadows (including self-shadowing when I turn away from the sun).
