I think that's perfectly reasonable. Although I'm not a native speaker I quickly get annoyed at people's inability to form proper sentences. But only in formal situations, such as the job application scenario in the original article.
I went to a Barclays bank in the UK the other day to try and open a business account. One of the main reasons I didn't go with them was that the guy who was going to be my 'personal banker' could not spell the words maintenance ('maintainance') and developer ('devloper'). This just makes you seem incredibly unprofessional and unworthy of future dealings.
- debacle 14y agoI don't know, sometimes I misspell maintenance on purpose out of spite for the English language.
- DannoHung 14y agoReally? That's a rather phonetically spelt word, aside from the "s" sound at the end.
- debacle 14y agoBut why change the spelling? Maintainance looks much more logically correct.
- StavrosK 14y agoBecause that's pronounced "maintain-ance". Stress on the "ain".
- nirvdrum 14y agoThat sounds like a regional dialect. I've never heard it pronounced that way in the northeast US at the very least.
- StavrosK 14y agoI don't think anyone pronounces it that way, because what everyone is saying is the word that is spelt "maintenance". If you were to actually pronounce the word that is spelt "maintainance", that is how it would be pronounced, with the stress on the "ain".
- ianterrell 14y agoDon't get me started on 'curiosity' and 'judgment'.
- philbarr 14y agoIt's amazing how many times I see the word "devloper". Maybe having to type "e" twice so close together is what causes the typo..?
- irahul 14y agoI think it's more phonetic in nature. That isn't a mistake you will see often in India. We say all letters loud and clear:)
- tomflack 14y agoHmm I can't think of an accent that removed the second E when saying developer. In my own accent it is quite accentuated. "de-vel-oper" Which accents did you have in mind?
