It is mostly a marketing gimmick. Tech companies want people to believe that their models can do "anything", even become conscious. Anyone who understands the technology can see that this is nonsense. But they'll continue to repeat this while the money is coming, so unsuspecting investors will poor more and more money into AI companies.
