I think a better approach is to have a separate machine as a local server for specialized loads - be it rendering, LLMs, or whatever.
For daily drivers I agree with the author, fresh machines can last almost a decade. Browser, productivity, etc now works well on a phone, should work well on a 6-8 year old pc (if you can avoid windows). My 2013 Mac Air runs Mint Linux very well and does all this.
Separate server allows to decouple needs, get specific hardware and have simpler and independent update cycle. Also here buying refurbished enterprise hardware should last 5-8 years for a local user, again preventing from buying new…
Demanding Gaming is the exception to this idea, but I only play games from 5 years ago, as my backlog is huge and I buy on Steam Deals mostly. No more day 1 patches for me
