Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers

- lapcat 2y agoSee also: https://www.linuxfoundation.org/supporters-of-chromium-based-browsers https://www.linuxfoundation.org/supporters-of-chromium-based... It's truly baffling to me why The Linux Foundation would be interested in supporting and fostering Chromium monoculture. Perhaps they were just tempted by Google money?
- theandrewbailey 2y agoThe US recently ruled against Google in an antitrust case, forcing Google to sell Chrome. If that means they won't/can't develop its Chromium base anymore, I think the Linux Foundation would be an appropriate organization for Chromium development to live, among the Linux Foundation's other projects: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Linux_Foundation_projects https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Linux_Foundation_proj...
- lapcat 2y agoSell Chrome, not give it away for free. Also: "The Chromium projects themselves will remain under current, existing governance structures while just the new Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers will be housed under the Linux Foundation." Anyway, the question wasn't why Google is interested in this; the question was why The Linux Foundation is interested.
- d3Xt3r 2y agoAgreed, in fact this is a pretty disappointing development - Chromium doesn't need any more support when it's already the overwhelming majority. I wish they picked non-Chromium based browser instead, such as Servo or Ladybird.
- 1oooqooq 2y agowhy are you surprised? Linux foundation is today's w3c for server software. they exist exclusively to push corporate will on open source and specifications. why people assume it is related to Linux or the kernel baffles me. but that's the point of the name. they contribute close to nothing: build servers and one single conf. in exchange of setting the tone and drowning development in nonsense. edit: the younger crowd not familiar with w3c, they drowned browser development under nonsense from the advertising industry, the one that gave your chrome monoculture.
