You got conned. Home insurance costs still rising in Florida
- antasvara 2y agoI work in insurance. I won't pretend that we're saints, but the author here is seriously underplaying some of these factors. 1. The hurricane risk is the main driver of insurance costs. This risk has been underpriced for years. The next time a hurricane runs through Florida, check and see how many Florida-specific insurance companies go under. 2. Florida makes up 79% of homeowner's insurance lawsuits in the US, but only 9% of the claims. Yes, fraud prevention measures should be taken. But the scale of the problem is much larger than that. 3. If all of the current policies were sent to Citizens (the state insurer of last resort) and given their rates, Citizens would be losing billions of dollars. The tone of this article makes it seem like the insurers are making a bunch of money in Florida. That is incorrect.
