Multiple Apple employees fired for Matching Grants fraud; six charged so far

- markus_zhang 2y agoFirst comment seems to contain more interesting information: Other sources are reporting that 185 employees have been fired. They've also named the charities involved—the American Chinese International Cultural Exchange (ACICE) and Hop4Kids—as well as the person who headed the scheme, Siu Kei Kwan. Kwan served as the CEO for Hops4Kids, and the accountant for ACICE. The investigation also claims that not only were the original donations funneled back to the individuals involved, but the matching donations were, as well.

- JumpCrisscross 2y ago“Siu Kei (Alex) Kwan, 37, of Castro Valley, Yathei (Hayson) Yuen, 34, of San Jose, Yat C (Sunny) Ng, 35, of Milpitas, Wentao (Victor) Li, 38, of Hayward, Lichao Ni, 39, of Sunnyvale, and Zheng Chang, 31, of Union City, are charged with multiple felony offenses including grand theft, conspiracy to commit felony grand theft, perjury, and tax fraud. Furthermore, they face charges under the aggravated white-collar crime enhancement due to the substantial sums involved. If convicted, they could face time in jail, be forced to pay back restitution, and be levied fines and fees.” What a stupid way to go for little for folks with so much to lose.
- s1artibartfast 2y agoI wonder how they were caught. I assume someone blabbed.
- Gibbon1 2y agoOn thing that happens is one of the people involved in the cunning plan is also doing sleazy stuff on the side and gets caught for that. Then the auditors wonder why they donated $1500 to a charity and then got $3000 back. The old director of my division at intel got busted because the guy he was insider trading with was funneling money to the Tamil Tigers.
- markus_zhang 2y agoYeah that's so stupid...with the location and the age they probably lose much more than they "earned".
- beardyw 2y agoIt's a weird kind of fraud where the guilty party doesn't gain, and the defrauded party gives to charity.
- s1artibartfast 2y agoMy understanding is that the employees received tax deductions for charitable donations, and perhaps some of the matching funds.
