- jacob019 2y agoWell, backend is our precious server resources and front end resources belong to the lowly user. It's a matter of scale though, frontend is optinized for one concurrent user. Plenty of small websites using slow and bloated frameworks on the backend because it's easy.
- masom 2y agoSimple economics; who pays for the servers and who pays for the front-end execution? Front-ends are essentially free distributed computing resources while the backends need to be paid for.
- lelandfe 2y agoI have stopped mentioning frontend performance being my speciality on interviews as it has elicited tepid responses from all but one.
- myself248 2y agoI imagine interviewing at McMaster-Carr to be a very different experience than Home Depot.
- lelandfe 2y agoBut also Apple, and Uber, etc. It was surprising.
- myself248 2y ago(My joke was that McMaster's website is one of the fastest in the world, and Home Depot's is one of the slowest.)
- lelandfe 2y agoI'm well aware! :) McMaster-Carr's perf story is legendary, and is frequently cited as inspiration by other companies. I've actually done deep dives on both (Home Depot has other good qualities). ...Yet companies you'd think would be similarly obsessed with FE perf are, at least in the hiring stage, totally nonplussed by that background. C'est la vie.

- madeofpalk 2y agoI don't think that is true of "HN". This thread, about how wasteful frontend development is, is a pretty standard trope in the comments here. Loads of developers everywhere, frontend and backend, go to lengths to optimise their programs. Loads of other developers also don't care.
- potsandpans 2y agoIt's funny how some folks with no domain experience hn seem to be obsessed with html.
- pjmlp 2y agoDon't forget Electron as well.
- undersuit 2y agoMy Chromebook all of the sudden needs compute to serve ads. RIP uBlock.
