I've made good french fries. It's not that hard. It certainly doesn't require one being Blumenthal. It does, however, take too much advanced planning and frankly it's not worth the hassle of cleaning up. That said, I don't think it's really worth the hassle to fry frozen fries either - and even convection baked they're meh.
