We didn't have social media yet. If you look at Reddit, for instance, many subreddits around jobs, the economy, etc are 99% negative. While the economy isn't the greatest, it's not nearly as bad as the people posting and commenting would lead you to believe. If you read these too often, you start having a much more negative view of life. My family is like this. I didn't realize it until I moved out in my 20s and my life and outlook immediately improved. If I'm around them too often, they suck the life out of you with negativity.
