Hacker News should prohibit all political submissions. There will never be just or righteous political discussion if the same people that deny the existence of a genocide in Gaza turn around to protest a genocide in the Donbas. It pains me to indict a community that I call my peers, but we are clearly beyond any common ground of empathy that would unify us against pointless persecution. It is double-standards all the way down - the tech industry has proven again and again that it lacks the emotional wherewithal to meditate on it's flaws.
This site functions well when we all pretend to be civil and cheer on pugilist interpretations of finance, technology and security. It collapses entirely when you introduce nationalities, political figures, or even simple moral objections to current events. We bend the guidelines for nobody's benefit when certain political threads are magically sanctioned and certain others get flagged into oblivion.
- ashvardanian 2y agoIMHO, avoiding discussion is hardly a solution to any problem. Also worth noting, that the community on HN seems much more mature than an average Subreddit or X thread, so I wouldn't expect it to "collapse" from Lex's interviews.
- mongol 2y agoYou say "the same people" but we are all individuals and we don't all share the same views on one topic just because we share it on another. So simply put, I don't agree with this.
- tim333 2y agoIt's already suggested by the guidelines: >Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, or celebrities, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon... Another issue with the Lex podcast is being three hours long it's quite hard to figure which bit you are discussing.
