- PaulHoule 2y agoOne could argue the best way to save the earth is develop a fast breeder reactor coupled to a gas turbine that would be cheaper than renewables + storage. You'd get the people who are worried about the price of eggs rioting in the street to protest fossil fuels we can't afford. Not a bird in the hand. I don't disagree about the nature based schemes. I think a better answer is a global carbon tax. Let people decide if they'd rather not make it, store it, whatever. I used to say that I thought $100/ton was a good price because I'd read about scalable CCS systems costing out like that, but that doesn't seem so realistic. Also $100/ton is about $1 gallon on gas. People would bitch about gas going up $1 but I have lived through cycles where the price of gas has gone up more than that and it didn't make me stop driving. (On the other hand I have always driven a compact car and I'm a straphanger because the parking situation at my Uni is dire.)
- gibbitz 2y agoThe best way to save the planet would be to engineer a virus that kills people effectively and doesn't jump into other species. Any rules or regulations will be fought by oligarchs (who due to campaign finance have complete control of the US government) and chipped away until they get the coal burning 24 hour free labor environment of the Victorian era again.
