I do this because I've abandoned GitHub for self-hosted repos, but I'm aware that _some_ interviewers use GitHub green boxes as a signal when assessing candidates. Whether that is a good interview practice or not, or how common it is, is debatable. When I evaluated faking commits, I decided that there's basically zero downside to doing this and at minimum a negligible upside.
