- dblohm7 2y agoThis is true, but I'd love to see something happen to force Canadian provinces's hands to improve this. To dream the impossible dream...
- fidotron 2y agoIndeed. I don’t think I have met a single person that thinks the Canadian constitution as is is the right thing, but also have never met any two people that agree on what it should be instead. If anything the recent Trumpian outbursts have demonstrated just how strong the inertia is on this. For it to change will take a genuine existential crisis.
- rayiner 2y agoWhy? Until its recent immigration debacle, Canada was one of the most efficiently governed countries in the world. 15-20 years ago, Canada had lower non-defense government spending per capita than the U.S., despite having a universal healthcare system. Canadian federalism has been incredibly effective, with the majority of all spending happening at the provincial level and meaningful differences between provincial policy reflective of local concerns.

- cmrdporcupine 2y agoThe weird trade things between the provinces are more to do with special exceptions and regulations around alcohol, trades regulation, etc. than the kind of tariff-oriented things people are talking usually with "free trade". They're a product of the fact that Canada, like the US, is a highly federal system and the provinces have strong powers. In some cases, stronger than in the US system (and in other cases, not) In any case, we already have a free trade agreement with the EU. In some respects for some products its better than what we have with the US.
