Some of it is this. I often buy things I suspect are low quality. Why? I can't really figure out what is or isn't low quality, so I am basically purchasing the cheapest raffle ticket so the cost of being wrong is minimal. Same with a lot of services. I often cheap out and DIY. Might I screw up? Absolutely. But family experience with trades has shown that they are also a crapshoot outside a few certifications. Breaking a few locks or light fixtures is cheaper than screwing up once on a locksmith or handyman.
