D&D kind of bugs me because the combat mechanics, at least for warrior classes, are excessively vague and abstract. For instance: It has never been clear what HP actually represents, with some holding that it's a luck pool, and others that it's a toughness pool. But that's just the tip of the iceberg -- nothing about D&D's combat mechanics maps neatly to reality, and at high levels even naked barbarians are arrow and crossbow dart sponges.
I keep thinking that it would be fun to make a clone of the new open-license D&D with completely overhauled combat/armor/weapon mechanics, from a clean sheet. But then I reflect on the scope of the work involved, and the fact that I'm not yet retired, and I snap out of it.
