Because people are overwhelmingly selfish A-holes who are excellent at incorrectly justifying anything that benefits themselves as good for everyone. It gets worse when you pair it with sociopathic corporations as they will always push for more. This kind of bad behaviour is kept in check by competition so only becomes a problem when government can be influenced to grant rights or when competition reaches its natural conclusion of monopoly. Both situations need strong institutions looking out for the majority of people, which we obviously don't have in the government in either case because antitrust breakups rarely happen anymore and copyright is crouched in maximizing benefits to rights holders rather than minimizing market distortion while increasing creative output to some desired level.
