Popeye and Tintin will soon lose copyright protection

- mindslight 2y agoWhy are pro freedom developments so often narrated in negative terms? "lose" copyright protection, housing market "crash", and so on. What is (hopefully) happening is that the public will now finally gain full access to these works that have already been part of the public consciousness for nearly a century. That is multiple generations of people being born, living, and dying, yet being told that these public symbols are someone else's to control for their entire life! Ten years of copyright would be plenty of time to create and commercially exploit new works. That the corporate rent seekers have been able to march the length of time steadily upwards despite the amount of new creative works continually expanding, including the shameless creation of maximalist memetic trash like the term "Intellectual Property", really just shows how disempowering our political representation is.
- snapplebobapple 2y agoBecause people are overwhelmingly selfish A-holes who are excellent at incorrectly justifying anything that benefits themselves as good for everyone. It gets worse when you pair it with sociopathic corporations as they will always push for more. This kind of bad behaviour is kept in check by competition so only becomes a problem when government can be influenced to grant rights or when competition reaches its natural conclusion of monopoly. Both situations need strong institutions looking out for the majority of people, which we obviously don't have in the government in either case because antitrust breakups rarely happen anymore and copyright is crouched in maximizing benefits to rights holders rather than minimizing market distortion while increasing creative output to some desired level.
