  "Everyone owns shoes, why would Imelda Marcos do any different?" Naturally one should pay a lot more attention to the "friends" of government officials when those officials are crooks with a clear history of nepotism, embezzlement, and special "favors" for those friends.

  I don’t think the article is trying to answer “why.” (That part is obvious.) I think it’s trying to answer “who.” That is, who among the tech billionaires would happily align with a criminal, authoritarian leader for a few more points on the net worth leaderboard or a taste of political power?
