"Musk is keen on criticizing many governments, domestic and foreign. But has Musk ever criticized the Chinese government? Even once?"
We are going to go here, when the Democrat party has not only had spies in their offices from China, but had a presidential running mate that literally worked with the Chinese government for 25+ years.
It's the same with Russia. Bernie Sanders talked about his love of Russia (and it was accepted, because socialism) and as soon as Trump is accused of being a Russian spy, it's now a bad thing.
It is kind of curious to me though that the two things that will definitely help with climate change: nuclear power and electric cars, which Musk supports, are now being down played every week on HN as if it's a bad thing.
It's as if all of these things don't really matter and it was all about power and politics.....
- peutetre 2y agoCan you find for me a single criticism of the Chinese government from Musk? I'd like to see it.
- billy99k 2y agoCan you find me a single criticism, from the people that are criticizing Musk, of what I described here?
- peutetre 2y agoSo it's a "no" then. That's a shame.
- billy99k 2y agoSo it's a logical fallacy then. I could say Musk doesn't criticize elephants too. Does this mean he supports them?
- peutetre 2y agoI hope he supports elephants. They're very endangered. We've already seen that Musk has pledged his commitment to China's core socialist values. Musk also advocates for Taiwan's submission to China: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/oct/08/elon-musk-taiwan-china-special-administrative-zone-hong-kong https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/oct/08/elon-musk... Musk decried California's covid measures as "fascist": https://www.theverge.com/2020/4/29/21242102/elon-musk-coronavirus-fascist-shelter-in-place-tesla-covid-19-safety-science https://www.theverge.com/2020/4/29/21242102/elon-musk-corona... But praised China's covid efforts because "Shanghai's COVID-19 measures helped lay the foundation for the city's future development" even though they were stricter than California's: https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/tesla-suspends-production-shanghai-factory-4-days-comply-with-covid-curbs-2022-03-28/ https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/tesla-... Musk is full of praise and support for China. Can you find for me a single criticism of the Chinese government from Musk?
- n4r9 2y agoI may be taking the "whatbout" bait, but what you've described is nonsense. Tim Walz ran a business organising educational trips to China. That's it. He hasn't "worked with" the Chinese government "for 25 years" and I'm confident that you cannot prove this claim. Walz is highly critical of the Chinese government, backed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, and has held meetings with the Dalai Lama, Joshua Wong, and Lobsang Sangay. These are absolutely not the actions of someone who's in cahoots with the Chinese government.
- billy99k 2y ago"but what you've described is nonsense" If what I described is 'nonsense', criticizing Musk for not criticizing China is also 'nonsense' and this entire conversation is moot. But I suspect you don't feel this way. "Walz is highly critical of the Chinese government," Not according to his students. If you were there pre-Tiananmen Square and post-Tiananmen Square and you really didn't like China, you wouldn't continue to business with them and give them money for 25 years after this. Exactly like Musk, he continues to do business with China, even after all of the human rights violation. But, you defend him. It's interesting that it's okay to talk about how bad the Chinese government is now on HN. For years if you even mentioned it, you were deemed racist and downvoted. Once again, the tides change when it can be used against a political enemy.
- n4r9 2y ago> [Walz is not critical of the Chinese government] according to his students. Have you got a source for this? He consistently advised his students to be skeptical of the Chinese government, e.g. https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2024/10/05/what-really-happened-on-tim-walzs-trips-to-china-00179326 https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2024/10/05/what-reall... > [If] you really didn't like China, you wouldn't continue to business with them [post-Tiananmen] He loved the Chinese people and hated the government. He was strongly critical of the Tiananmen square massacre as is evident in congress proceedings: https://www.congress.gov/event/113th-congress/house-event/LC23425/text https://www.congress.gov/event/113th-congress/house-event/LC... . Famously he even put up a picture of Tank man in his office. > Exactly like Musk, he continues to do business with China No, not "exactly like". Walz is critical of the Chinese government. Musk is bizarrely quiet about it, despite being critical of governments in the West.
