This is super interesting. I've been wondering for a while about the role of iron in health, with consideration of things like the influence of the iron scavenger P. gingivalis. I do wonder if iron is the real reason for red meat being associated with worse health outcomes.
- voisin 2y agoI believe Dr Greger (well known vegan doctor who provides research support for his claims) has some videos on this.

- flawn 2y agoCan you elaborate what iron does in that context? It has a bad effect?
- hgomersall 2y agoHere's a paper that describes in vivo P. gingivalis interaction with iron. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2825758/ https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2825758/ There's some suggestion that P. gingivalis is implicated in system wide effects: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41368-022-00215-y https://www.nature.com/articles/s41368-022-00215-y I've read various other things about it's pro-inflammatory effect. I'm somewhat wary of dental hygienists given how much trauma they seem to impart and the consequential risk of getting oral bacteria into the bloodstream.
