Lawmakers sound alarm over TSA facial recognition technology

- eesmith 2y ago> “The reality is, if you are using your smartphone, if you’re posting on social media, you are violating your own privacy far more than anything that’s going to happen at an airport,” Jacobson said. But, but, but ... I don't have a smartphone precisely because they violate my privacy, and HN is the closest I get to social media - in part because they haven't been using my PI in those privacy-destroying ways. (Right?) So to me Jacobson is saying that most people are already far down the slippery slope, so the remaining few should be forced onto it. > Merkley says if you don’t want to, you don’t have to. Yeah, I opt out for the porno scanners too. I get anxiety attacks confronting authority, because the weight of the state is very powerful and I am a nobody. This is saying that I should plan to never fly again. Merkley's page at https://www.merkley.senate.gov/in-midst-of-busy-travel-season-merkley-kennedy-colleagues-sound-alarm-on-tsa-collection-of-facial-biometric-data/ https://www.merkley.senate.gov/in-midst-of-busy-travel-seaso... links to his video at https://x.com/SenJeffMerkley/status/1706380232414941412 https://x.com/SenJeffMerkley/status/1706380232414941412 showing how hard it is for anyone to know that 1) they are using facial recognition, and 2) that they have the right to opt-out. What good is it being able to opt-out when you don't know that's an option, and when the TSA staff aren't appropriately trained (or trained to encourage you to not opt out)? Oh, right - it's a fig leaf to say that it's all voluntary. Just like having a smartphone is voluntary.
