PSA: AirPods Max are missing a key feature on the new USB-C model
- m463 2y agoclickbait title could be more straightforward, like: "PSA: AirPods Max missing wired playback with the new USB-C model"
- rjh29 2y agoI use Sony WH-1000XM4 and it has a native 3.5mm jack alongside USB-C, which even works when the battery is dead. It's been pretty useful over time, especially with musical instruments or older hardware. Honestly it's a baffling decision to remove support but not exactly unprecedented from Apple.
- throwaway314155 2y agoI wasn't able to get wired playback (whatsoever) working with the aforementioned lightning to 3.5 mm adapter on my old lightning port pair of Airpods Max. What gives? Had thought this was a limitation of the whole line of products.
- filoleg 2y agoThat indeed sounds strange. Was the headset charged? That’s the only reason i can think of off the top of my head I used that lightning to 3.5mm cable from apple with my airpods max quite a few times with no issues. Mostly for the purpose of playing some ps5 games with surround sound (by connecting the 3.5mm end to the port on the gamepad).
- throwaway314155 2y agoWell then, sounds like my unit was simply malfunctioning. Sorry about that.
- Slow_Hand 2y agoYeah. This is a huge bummer in the record making community and word got around immediately in my circles that they're incapable of going direct. As it turns out the AirPods Max (v1) are great headphones for many critical listening tasks (with a few caveats). So the announcement of a USB connector on v2 was a huge deal. Several people I know bought them on day 1 and had to return them as soon as they discovered this flaw. One industrious friend wired their own custom cable that terminates in a 1/8" plug to work around the limitation.
