Note that Japan isn't exactly gleaming either; I personally don't believe their chip ventures in Hokkaido and elsewhere will bear fruit given history.
- pezezin 2y agoA chip factory in bumfuck Hokkaido, really? I work in kinda similar environment in Aomori (https://www.ifmif.org/ https://www.ifmif.org/), and I can tell you that unless they pay ridiculous amounts of money, it is going to be a massive failure, for a simple reason: no sane Japanese engineer wants to move here.

- pezezin 2y ago頑張って下さい Can you believe that my place was proposed for ITER (the big international fusion reactor in France), and is still proposed for DEMO (the next step after ITER)? We are struggling to find a few dozen people and somehow the Japanese government wants to build a huge project that will require hundreds or even thousands of people. These guys want to build a huge factory in Hokkaido, good luck to them.
- Mistletoe 2y agoWhy don’t they want to move there?
- rtpg 2y agoAomori is far away, and there aren't that many other jobs there. So you move out there... and now all of a sudden your life depends on your one job continuing to be good. Golden handcuffs.
- pezezin 2y agoIn addition to what the other comment said: the weather is quite harsh, the cities don't offer many services (and the villages offer none), and transportation is quite bad.
