Become hyper-aware of how a business measure your value as a SWE. How? Ask pointed, uncomfortable questions that force the people paying you to think and be transparent.
Stay on the cutting edge of how to increase your output and quality using AI.
Ie: how long does it take for a new joiner to produce code? How do you cut that time down by 10x using “AI”?
- irunmyownemail 2y ago"Stay on the cutting edge of how to increase your output and quality using AI." If AI (there is no AI, it's ML Machine Learning) were truly as good as the true believers want to see it as; then it could be useful. It isn't.
- shiveenp 2y agoExplain to me how you think a sophisticated random text generator will take all jobs. Especially since it’s trained on existing corpus of data on the internet created by? Guess who, existing engineers. I’m genuinely curious on the backing of these “trust me bro” style statements.
- manesioz 2y agoIf you think that state-of-the-art LLMs are "random text generators" I don't know what to say to you.

- tumetab1 2y agoMy personal estimation is that this will be noticeable in the first six months of 2025 in the USA big tech organizations. I think this is actually already in motion in board meetings, I'm pretty sure executives are discussing something like "if we spend Z$ on AI tools, can we avoid hiring how many engineers?"
- aprilthird2021 2y agoOkay, I'll come back in 6 months and we can assess this honestly. The government projects this job type will grow 18% in the next decade: https://www.bls.gov/ooh/computer-and-information-technology/software-developers.htm#tab-6 https://www.bls.gov/ooh/computer-and-information-technology/...
