I won’t believe that they’ll fix the dreaded bottom mounted charge port until I see it. Only Apple could get away with such an inexplicably bad design choice for so long.
- mattl 2y agoI don’t see why it’s such an issue. The mouse charges to a day of use on a five minute charge. They don’t want you to run it wired all the time.
- andersco 2y agoIn my experience it takes much longer than 5m but I also have an old mouse. It forces me to stop using the mouse while charging it. I own a second cheap mouse for this reason alone, to use while it’s charging. With their keyboard I can charge it while continuing to use it, so if they really didn’t want to allow for use while charging, it would seem they’d do the same with the keyboard.
- mattl 2y agoKeyboard doesn’t move much. To support the usage of a wired mouse it would need a longer cable. I never used this mouse for too long as I find it uncomfortable but the Magic Trackpad is very nice.
- coldtea 2y agoA few reasons: - it takes longer than 5m IRL IMHO - the message to charge it always pops up at the most inconvenient times - and 99% of the time, it pops up either when there are still like enough % charge for hours (which encourages you to ignore it if you're busy atm), and then again when it's too late and it's shutting down pronto
- 6SixTy 2y agoApple hasn't really been known for good mice especially since they switched to usb. Their best mouse was the Mighty Mouse and not by much. The entire magic mouse concept is half baked since it relies too much on invisible touch areas for much of it's functionality. It's also way too thin for most people to use comfortably for extended periods of time. It's a really bad design overall but the bottom mounted charging port was the straw that broke the camels back. Apple could release a "pro" mouse that mostly copies the functionality and form of the MX Master 3s, and it would likely be a home run.

It's not like with visible areas I look at my mouse to see where to press. I don't even use tactile info (like the raised edge of a button in a conventional mouse) to see where to press, it's just muscle memory based on holding the mouse
- Terr_ 2y agoTrying to imagine the most charitable interpretation here: Perhaps they're worried about people breaking the charge-port, where standard USB connectors are not rated for the kind of wiggling and jiggling going on. Especially if some portion of consumers always leave it connected, either out of ignorance or paranoia. From that perspective, placing it at the bottom is a clever way to ensure that the more-fragile connector is left alone while inserted.
