Without looking too much at the generated assembly in https://godbolt.org/z/fKEPaTdTv https://godbolt.org/z/fKEPaTdTv, it seems that using_map uses SIMD instructions (movdqu and psubd) in the main loop, while using_loop doesn't, so that could indeed explain the performance difference.
