If it were actually interesting then you'd see more comments. The fact that people upvote random crap has no bearing on the content being interesting enough to spark a discussion. People upvote without even reading the articles, based on their gut feeling. Also you can't downvote on HN, and the activity is not high enough to expect uninteresting crap to be overwhelmed by the interesting crap. Sometimes it just gets through.
