I wonder how many of the people back-patting the author and each other work for companies whose business models entail egregiously violating users' privacy or destroying the economic security of low-wage workers? How many work on exploitative AI projects--especially AI art--that rely on training data used without permission or compensation? Yet suddenly, when it comes to bettering the United States' and her allies' war-making capabilities, ethics become an issue?
Thank god during the Cold War we had real tech companies, like Digital and HP, staffed by real engineers whose heads were screwed on straight and whose values weren't perverted.
