Understanding the neural code of stress to control anhedonia
- domofutu 2y agoTL;DR: Resilient mice (the stress-resistant ones) could clearly tell the difference between rewards, like sweet sucrose, and less appealing options. Their brains stayed focused on chasing the good stuff. Susceptible mice (the ones hit harder by stress) got stuck in mental loops, overthinking their choices and losing interest in rewards. This "rumination-like" brain activity mirrors patterns seen in depression. The study suggests a connection between two brain areas, the ventral hippocampus (vCA1) and the basolateral amygdala (BLA). Stimulating this circuit in stressed-out mice helped them rediscover their drive for rewards and improved their brain activity. When just hanging out, stressed mice showed chaotic brain activity, hinting that their struggles go deeper than behavior.
