- gedy 2y agoI’m not defending US healthcare insurance providers by any means - however, when I read what he and his mother were suffering from, I can’t help but think what they would’ve done 100 years ago? These treatments and drugs were not available then (I suppose there was morphine or Opium), and now is basically a question of money and copays. It sucks the costs are so high, but their situation does not fill me with the anger and indignation like others I've read, and wonder if this guy was basically angry with life and looking to blame someone.

Policy is, supposedly (but not actually), collectively agreed upon. We choose not to fix this. Some will do nothing about this. Some will do something.
- gedy 2y ago> You might just not have enough empathy Not at all, my family members have had struggles with crappy insurance. I'm sure it was tough for them with chronic pain - but I don't see a dotted line from health insurance stupidity to their suffering. Especially given his background, income, and earnings potential, I'm not seeing a reason for him to blame insurance tbh.
- toomuchtodo 2y agoI see a direct line, as someone who has advocated for hundreds of people seeking permanent birth control and in every instance, insurance (UHC primarily) attempt to avoid paying what they are legally mandated by the ACA to pay (100%). I have emails, phone logs, letters to state (dept of insurance) and federal (dept of labor) regulators in this regard. So, it is likely our perspective delta is a function of our lived experience. Let me know if you want to ride along sometime while I attempt to hack around fuckery. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41358773 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41358773

These treatments and drugs were not available then These treatments are available _now_, and everyone in western Europe can have them, from the poor to the ultra-rich. The fact that someone in the USA paying through the nose (in comparison to how much we pay in Europe) can't, should explain his motivations.
- gedy 2y ago> everyone in western Europe can have them, from the poor to the ultra-rich > ...should explain his motivations. Yes they can - however European medical systems do "ration" these in their own way, but via bureaucracy and waiting. Reading his manifesto, a big part of his frustration is getting the runaround and misdiagnosis. Given this guys mental state, I'm not confident he'd be fine with European care either. They also were not poor from what I understand.
- ghusto 2y ago> European medical systems do "ration" these in their own way, but via bureaucracy and waiting Not in the two European countries I've lived in. The UK's NHS works without insurance and is admittedly a total shitshow in London, but I've heard that it's okay outside of the major cities. Other countries that have varying levels of subsidised healthcare with insurance don't ration in the way you're describing.
- daft_pink 2y agoDid anyone notice that the media is literally trying to pin this on being an "assassin" in among us? https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/ironic-suspect-unitedhealthcare-slaying-played-video-game-killer-rcna183550 https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/ironic-suspect-unitedhe...
