Italy had a great post WW2 economic boom. Europe is suffering form the post-2008 austerity and failure to capture the international wealth generated by the new industry(tech) while it's older industries(like cars) are being destroyed by Asia, while being burdened with ballooning welfare costs of the ageing population and workforce that's uncompetitive with Asian labor costs but without the profitable innovations the likes of US has.
- toomuchtodo 2y agoWould tech have wealth to be generated if there was regulation to prevent the harm of social and adtech? (low quality example used, removed, thanks hollerith for pointing this out). Is that real wealth? Or is that broken window fallacy wealth (a facade of wealth created from capture of what should be a utility, as it is in many other OECD countries)? Certainly, chase legitimate value creation, that is the dire need (China does this well imho). Edit: > @Cumpiler69: You're moving the goalposts and also in the wrong direction. What does United have to do with this? There is a bucket of wealth creation that is of real value, and there is a bucket of wealth creation from regulatory capture and non "good faith" value creation (anything skimming off of the economy comes to mind immediately). If we're going to discuss what places like Italy or Europe could do better, this is an important part of the discussion (otherwise you're chasing the wrong metrics). I probably should've used Meta instead.
- Cumpiler69 2y agoYou're moving the goalposts and also in the wrong direction. What does United have to do with this? Yeah, the US healthcare system is kinda messed up, but you don't see skilled Americans going to take jobs in Italy for the better quality of life.
- toomuchtodo 2y agoAllow me to attempt a different approach. What jobs in Italy do you think would be most beneficial to improve financial prospects for those in need of jobs, and what industries would those jobs be concentrated in?
- Cumpiler69 2y agoYou should be asking those who are leaving Italy. I'm sure many would also move for work to the US if getting a visa was easy. But to retort to your question: Firstly, not every CEO in the US is there to extract wealth from the population some create a lot value to the US economy and welfare of the workers. And secondly Italians are alo being wealth extracted by their elites, despite not having privatized healthcare, that's why so many are leaving.
- toomuchtodo 2y agoDo you have anyone in Italy I could speak to on this topic?
- Cumpiler69 2y agoAsk here or on reddit?
- hollerith 2y ago>United Healthcare is the 8th most profitable company on Earth. They're #8 on the Fortune Global 500. Fortune Global 500 ranks by revenue not profit.
