And it keeps happening. Everyone knows just a subset of Vim, and everyone knows a different subset. Watching another person use it, you'll ask them how they did something. And they'll have to do it again, watching the keyboard, because they don't know the keys that they hit. It has entered their muscle memory.
- sneak 14y agoI am thinking of organizing vim user groups or tutoring sessions where an experienced vim user sits and watches a novice try to edit, and basically just yells at them (corrects them between NGGGGGHGHHHGHGBNNNN noises). I look forward to being one of these novices. I'm faster in vim than any other editor by far, but I know I could still be 2x faster.

- JonnieCache 14y agoThat sounds like a really dull anxiety dream. Or a really nerdy porn film.

- re_todd 14y ago"everyone knows a different subset" This was pretty much my experience with a co-worker. We both thought we were vim gurus, but I was shocked at all the tricks he did that I didn't know, and vice versa. I'm beginning to think that I know less than 1% of vim, but it still helps me be very productive.
- dredmorbius 14y agoWhich is one reason why little usage vignettes (vimgettes?) are helpful. I've got a quarter century history with vi and its kin, and am still learning new tricks.
