- tetris11 2y agoDerek Muller's now partnered with Electrify. People have mixed feelings about this, but it's unclear why
- RicoElectrico 2y agoIt's a pick your poison kinda situation I guess. Every large-scale YT sponsor is by definition suspicious. If they weren't, they would run with normal ad campaigns. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3t1d1zzu54 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3t1d1zzu54
- teekert 2y agoI'm always curious about such a person's financials. He seems to be able to purely follow his passion, but maybe that's not true, it's not really mentioned anywhere. It looks like it must come with a frugal life style. Still I love it that it is possible to live like this.
- RicoElectrico 2y agoIDK but for me both in Poland and US it seems high earners often spend on unnecessary things. I prefer to save up, which made me financially unsinkable.
- Luc 2y agoHe's an artist, he's probably represented by a gallery that sets up exhibitions worldwide and sells his works to collectors and museums of modern art. See also this other artist known for his whimsical inventions: https://www.panamarenko.be/ https://www.panamarenko.be/
- louwrentius 2y agoI don't know his financials, but in The Netherlands, we have a culture that values a balance between work and personal time. In the USA, people seem to live to work. In The Netherlands, we work to live.
- teekert 2y agoYeah you're right, and between care subsidies, rent subsidies, our progressive tax model and "bijstand" (almost like universal income, but you need to apply for jobs unless you have a good reason not to), and living in the social rent system (or better, have a house that is paid off somehow), you can come by on almost nothing indeed.
- louwrentius 2y agoThat’s a total caricature of our society, try again.
- teekert 2y agoIt's a theory for how Theo could devote most of his time to his passion and still live.
- 23B1 2y agoI remember posting Strandbeest to https://www.webdesignmuseum.org/gallery/kaliber10000-2003 https://www.webdesignmuseum.org/gallery/kaliber10000-2003 way back in the early 2000s or so! Warms my heart that he's still going.
- louwrentius 2y agoAs stated in the video, it translates to 'beach beast' (which you probably figured out yourself). What I find remarkable is how difficult it seems for a lot of native English speakers to correctly pronounce the word. https://translate.google.com/?sl=nl&tl=en&text=strandbeest&op=translate https://translate.google.com/?sl=nl&tl=en&text=strandbeest&o...
- mcphage 2y ago> how difficult it seems for a lot of native English speakers to correctly pronounce the word It matches pretty closely to English words, or strings with well understood English pronunciations, that are different than the Dutch pronunciation. Given that most English speakers read that word before hearing it, our brains tell us how it should be pronounced, and we need to both (a) identify that it doesn't just sound different because of the speaker's accent, and (b) train our brain to say it the way we hear it, not the way we read it. I would imagine it's easier to learn the correct pronunciation for words that an English speaker wouldn't otherwise have any idea how to pronounce.
