Ask HN: How did Twilio go from 'Up in 5 min' to one of the longest onboardings?

I remember the first time I saw a Twilio demo for sending SMS in at an event in NYC. It was beautiful and simple. I just tried to add SMS to an app recently, and I must say, tis not sweet as it was before. I think I even have to wait for some months, get some approvals blah blah just to send SMS using Twilio. How and when did this happen? It is quite a terrible and arduous process now.
