They were created by David, the first synthetic sentient android created by Weyland, when he and Shaw hijacked an engineer ship. We see the skull of one on the predators' ship in Predator 2 (set in 1997). And Alien vs. Predator was set in 2004. The whole business with David wasn't until 2091 or so.
