I want to shout out my favorite author, who, in my opinion, espouses all of the correct opinions on the subject matter of the article. Jim Stiles. He passed away this year.
His website, https://www.canyoncountryzephyr.com/ https://www.canyoncountryzephyr.com/, is a treasure of the American West; it's not clear how long the site will remain.
His book, "Brave New West: Morphing Moab at the Speed of Greed" is a metaphoric eulogy of the town of Moab, Utah. His opinions are very much in the vein of his contemporary, Ed Abbey, who is more famously known as an outspoken opponent of development in the American West. Stiles' book presents a critical look at the "discovery" and "capitalization" of Moab and the surrounding desert landscape, particularly by mountain bikers and off-road vehicles.
Reading the BBC article, I can see the similarities. The inevitable entrepreneur-colonists are likely already there ("We have a lot of cyclists here," he [the mountain hut caretaker] told me, and a few hours later, two American couples entered the hut asking if they could charge their e-bikes.")
