She believed she was an FBI 'asset.' The scam drained her life's savings
- deleted 2y ago[deleted]
- bell-cot 2y ago> In twice-daily conversations over the next three months, the imposter FBI agent [fed the scam victim an extremely detailed story about all the things that a supposed drug cartel was doing with her supposedly-stolen SSN] Was this victim a training exercise for a scammer who wanted to be promoted to bigger fish, or what? That's far too many man-hours to invest in scamming one "retired therapist". Though it sounds like a grueling test for the victim loving a good story, and lacking any real-world sense whatever of how law enforcement works.

For people who live on a tenth of what we do a day, the return on investment is probably massive, especially if you can work with multiple victims throughout the day. This kind of persistence is not even uncommon. In fact, I thought this article was going to be a rehash of this article from a while back by one of The Cut's Finance writers: https://www.thecut.com/article/amazon-scam-call-ftc-arrest-warrants.html https://www.thecut.com/article/amazon-scam-call-ftc-arrest-w...
