I never had good seniors/mentors, but I do hope I manage to be one occasionally. It wasn't until I started going to conferences, Lisp/Python/Perl etc, that I actually met people with the same level of brain damage or worse than me. Both paths lead to the same place, having access to mentors gets you there faster I guess.
